An Ayurvedic Care For a Better Vision
Shalakya thanthra is the branch of Ayurveda which deals with diagnosis and management of diseases occuring above the neck viz diseases of eye, ears, nose, throat, head and neck.
Various types of diseases of eye ie Nethra rogas are described in Ayurveda. The classification of eye diseases is well elaborated in Ayurveda classical texts like Charaka samhitha,Susrutha samhitha, Ashtanga Hrudayam,Ashtanga samgraham, etc.
The promotion of the Visual Acuity was considered as one of the priorities in the branch of shalakya thanthra. Many procedures and formulations have been described to cure the ophthalmic diseases.
Susrutha, the father of ancient Indian surgery, advocated kriyakalpa as the main theraputic procedures in Nethra rogas, along with other forms of treatments. Some of the proven principles of management procedures and medicaments include intake of ghee (Ghrutha paana), Tharpana(nourishing eye bath therapy), Nasya( processed liquid instalation through the nostrils by drops or powder) ,Parisheka( eye bath), Bidalaka(medicated paste application on eyelid), and Anjana(collyrium). These procedures improves the vision by strengthening of ciliary muscles, proper accomodation of lenses etc. On the other hand these procedures are helpful in dealing with inflammatory conditions like conjunctivitis, corneal ulsers etc.
Thus the kriyakalpa can be done in healing as well as eye diseased condition to improve the ophthalmic health.
